General Managers Journal

General Manager's July Journal

Let’s talk about some golf rules and etiquette at Southern Pines Golf Club.

Please remember that our rules apply to EVERY member and their Guests. And speaking of guests, each is the responsibility of the member. Now that that’s all out of the way, let’s start upon arrival at the club. When getting to the club, it is imperative that every golfer check in at the pro-shop.

General Manager's March Journal

It’s hard to imagine that the Super Bowl Scramble has already come and gone and the Chinnie Cup is only a few weeks away. To say that our season is racing along would be an understatement. We have already had a couple of social events this year that were a success and we hope to keep that buzz going throughout the year.

The Art of Winter Rules

Golf doesn’t have to end when the temperatures start to drop. During the first and last days of every playing season, when our course is in the “in-between” stage, my regular golf buddies and I permit ourselves to lift, clean and creatively place our balls within a club-length of where we find them, even in bunkers. I used to fret about this brazen violation of the game's rules; golf's most sacred imperative, after all, is "play the ball as it lies." But I've stopped feeling bad about rolling them over. As my friend Tim said recently, "There's a genuine art to improving a lie."

Letter from the General Manager

There are many people who embark on playing golf but do not really try to understand the rules or the courtesy used in what is called the “Gentlemen’s Game.” It is always good to at least understand the basics before you play a round of golf.

This is just to make sure we are on the same page. Golf is played by striking a ball using a club on an area called the “tee box.” Once the ball is hit, it typically lands on what is called a “fairway.”

The Rules of Golf “As they pertain to Southern Pines”

Over the next few months we thought it would be fun to review the rules of golf as they pertain to our golf courses. We will be putting different characters in separate situations on different holes at each course and allow you, the reader  to figure out the correct rulings.

Enjoy.

Southern Pines Tee Time on ESPN Radio

The Southern Pines Tee Time radio show will resume broadcasting on May 1, 2010 from 7:00am - 8:00am on 97.7 FM ESPN Radio.  We will be broadcasting live every Saturday from the Calvert Club house.

General Manager's April Journal

Why is it important to have my Driver fitted to me?  This is a question that a lot of us amateur golfers probably don't ask enough, but we should.  There are several reasons why we should make sure that our clubs and yes even Driver should be fitted to us.

But now it's back to business.  It's golfing time.

Hopefully we have a lot of good weather in the near future.  The courses should start turning green, the azaleas should start blooming soon, and no better time to get your game ready for the season than now. We have a few clinics coming up to help get you on your way. Please contact Dave, Jimmy, or Don in either pro-shop for dates and details.

Also, please remember our member’s membership drive. So far we have signed up 19 new members, that only leaves 71 for the month of March. We are off to a good start. But with your help we can finish with Greatness.

Thank you,

Chuck K. Brazzeal

General Manager's January Journal

After having one of the wettest winters that I personally can remember, I stepped out of the Club house yesterday and found the weather absolutely perfect.  For the first time in 2010 we had a great day for golf and it showed.  It seemed that a lot of the members thought the same thing as several rounds of golf were played on this holiday Monday.

General Manager's November Journal

Fall is upon us and winter is not far behind.  It seems like it has rained so much that we passed right through the changing of the seasons.  Fortunately, we experience mild winters for the most part and get to play golf year round.  Giving us more play than other regions of the country.
