What is Mardi Gras? Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. The Mardi Gras season begins on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas, also known as “Epiphany,” “Twelfth Night,” or “King’s Day,” and continues until Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras Louisiana-style started when French explorers celebrated the holiday on the Mississippi River in 1699. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power). These colors were chosen in 1872 by King of Carnival, Rex. Throughout, the years, communities have added to the celebration by establishing Krewes (organizations) that host parades and balls.
Our local Krewe of Janus was established in 1984. It was organized by the Twin Cities’ Jaycees and became an independent organization in 1989. Since the first year when crowds were estimated at 35,000, the Krewe of Janus Mardi Gras parade has grown to crowds of over 200,000 people who come from all over the USA. This year’s parade theme is “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” and will be held Saturday, February 11th and includes Saints player, Garrett Hartley, as Grand Marshall, local and out of state marching bands, and many floats. The Krewe has made substantial donations to charities over the years including ARCO, Camp Quality, Humane Society Adoption Center of Monroe, PAWS, Pilots for Patients, Ronald McDonald House, U.S. Soldiers’ Foundation, and Cancer Foundation League.
